Thomas Sankara was a African, young, brilliant, charismatic, innovative, revolutionary, outspoken, and righteous leader of Africa. Sankara was born December 21,1949 in Yako, Upper Volta now known as BURKINA FASO “The Land of Upright men”. He was a Burkinabé military captain, pilot, revolutionary, Pan-Africanist theorist, Women’s liberation advocate and the First President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. He amongst a group of Men living in Upper Volta launched a revolution against the French Colonial Power. They were tired of the imperialism in Africa and the exploitation of Africans that Europeans have done over the years. It was President Sankara who renamed the Country BURKINA FASO “The Land Of Upright Men” he changed the Flag and the national anthem as well. The purpose of this was to mark the rebirth of a Nation!
President Sankara was against seeking aid from outside sources he believed that as long as we seek aid from outsiders we would remain enslaved to their debt. One of his key speeches he discusses how we as Africans can produce enough food to feed us ALL. Produce even more than we need but because of lack of organization we continue to BEG others for AID.
At this time he becomes in conflict with the French who want keep control over their colonies because they benefit from Africa’s under development and poverty. He would face immense pressure from West to give in to Colonialism but he refused. He loved his people and he reassured them that Africa has a rich history in which we do not need outsiders help.
Thomas Sankara’s speech to the African Unity Organization Summit of 1987, in which he calls for his country to refuse to pay debts to international imperialist powers."OUR DEBTS ORIGINS COME FROM COLONIALISM’S ORIGINS ,THOSE WHO LEND US MONEY ARE THOSE WHO HAD COLONIZED US BEFORE, THEY ARE THOSE WHO USED TO MANAGE OUR STATES AND ECONOMIES, COLONIZERS WERE THOSE WHO INDEBTED AFRICA THROUGH THEIR BROTHERS AND COUSINS WHO WERE LENDERS….WE HAD NO CONNECTION WITH THIS DEBT THEREFORE WE CANNOT PAY IT.”
What intrigues me about President Sankara besides the fact that from what I read it seems he was Young, Fly, and Flashy; is that he did not just fight for Burkina Faso his ideas were for all of Africa. He was inspired by ideas of Ghana’s Jerry Rawlings, Fela Kuti, Che Guevara and others. He also fought for WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND LIBERATION. He believed that a society could not prosper unless the Women were liberated just like the Men. He outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy. He encouraged Women to stay in school and not just work from Home. He appointed Women to some of the highest governmental positions because he wanted them to be able to make important decisions for the Country as well. What fascinated me about Mr. Sankara was that I shared similar beliefs even before I knew of him. I think his philosophy is unique because as a MAN you don’t really see as much Men in POWER positions standing up for Women as there should be. His high official and close friend Blaise Compaoré with the support of foreign powers would betray him. He was assassinated in 1987. However Thomas Sankara was a huge Iconic figure and a true king to be remembered in time. One of Africa’s true champions, remember his name…
